$6,000 Piano with a $60,000 Sound?

As one of several piano technicians who serve out in the field (on this site), yesterday I had the opportunity of tuning a 10+ year old Kohler & Campbell baby grand (made by Samick in Korea ).

I tested a few notes on the piano before I began. The piano was more than 35 cents flat and had not been tuned in 5+ years. The mid-treble was very bright, and didn't even 'match' the highest treble and lowest bass notes' 'voice'.

After raising the pitch <50 cents (the piano was affirmatively a half step flat), stretching each individual string to exactly where you could actually "feel" the string reach it's intended point of 'apogee', the results were absolutely fascinating.

After playing a few chords and testing various intervals and octaves, "tone clusters", and the entire keyboard as a whole, I simply couldn't believe my ears.

I could only compare the experience to playing a $60,000+ hand made Mason & Hamlin Model A (5' 8") or AA (6' 4").

This outcome for me, had proven one thing about the world of pianos: more often than not, you get what you pay for.

Today had proved to be the exception.

The lesson? Thoroughly play, feel, listen to, and test each piano [brand or model] before you decide to buy any one in particular.

Observe how it stacks up against the more expensive competition, and allow your fingers and ears to tell you the difference.
